{"id":176,"date":"2004-10-07T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-10-07T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/queme.org\/en\/fifth-asem-summit-in-hanoi-109-euro-mps-call-for-the-immediate-release-of-buddhist-dissidents-thich-huyen-quang-and-thich-quang-do\/"},"modified":"2016-09-09T13:51:25","modified_gmt":"2016-09-09T13:51:25","slug":"fifth-asem-summit-in-hanoi-109-euro-mps-call-for-the-immediate-release-of-buddhist-dissidents-thich-huyen-quang-and-thich-quang-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/fifth-asem-summit-in-hanoi-109-euro-mps-call-for-the-immediate-release-of-buddhist-dissidents-thich-huyen-quang-and-thich-quang-do\/","title":{"rendered":"Fifth ASEM Summit in Hanoi\u00a0: 109 Euro MPs call for the immediate release of Buddhist dissidents Thich Huyen Quang and Thich Quang Do"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an Open Letter to the Presidency of the European Union, 109 prominent Members of the European Parliament from all political parties have urged the EU to place human rights, in particular human rights in Vietnam, <i>\u201cat the centre of discussions at the ASEM Summit in Hanoi\u201d<\/i>, and called for the <i>\u201cimmediate and unconditional release\u201d<\/i> of Buddhist dissidents <b>Thich Huyen Quang<\/b> and <b>Thich Quang Do<\/b>, leaders of the outlawed Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam (UBCV) and six other members of the UBCV leadership. <\/p>\n<p>In the Open Letter, the Euro MPs also expressed their deep concern on the lack of democracy and press freedom at the ASEM 5 People\u2019s Forum in Hanoi in September 2004, condemning <i>\u201cthe deliberate exclusion of Vietnamese civil society and the banning of access to the national and international press\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThis Open Letter, launched by such a wide cross-section of MEPs, shows a real movement of indignation at the abysmal human rights situation in Vietnam, host country of this ASEM Summit\u201d<\/i>, said Vo Van Ai, President of the Paris-based Vietnam Committee on Human Rights, noting that the appeal was endorsed by many leading figures of the EP\u2019s enlarged 25-country membership. Signatures include <b>Edward McMillan-Scott<\/b>, Vice-President of the European Parliament\u00a0; <b>Hans-Gert Poettering<\/b>, President of the EP\u2019s largest political group, the European People\u2019s Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats\u00a0; <b>Harlem Desir<\/b>, <b>Magda Kosane Kovacs<\/b>, <b>Pasqualina Napoletano<\/b> and <b>Jan Wiersma<\/b>, Vice-Presidents of the European Socialist Party\u00a0; <b>Graham Watson<\/b>, President of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe\u00a0; <b>Monica Frassoni<\/b> and <b>Daniel Cohn-Bendit<\/b>, Co-Presidents of the Greens\/European Free Alliance\u00a0; <b>Elmar Brok<\/b>, President of the EP Foreign Affairs Commission\u00a0; <b>Helene Flautre<\/b>, <b>Charles Tannock<\/b> and <b>Johan Van Hecke<\/b>, President and Vice-Presidents of the EP Sub-Commission on Human Rights\u00a0; former EU Commissioner <b>Emma Bonino<\/b> and <b>Marco Pannella<\/b>, leaders of the Transnational Radical\u00a0; <b>Max van den Berg<\/b>, Vice-President of the EP Commission for Development\u00a0; former Lithuanian Head of State <b>Vytautas Landsbergis<\/b>\u00a0; Prof. <b>Bronislaw Geremek<\/b>, historian and former Polish Foreign Minister\u00a0; and <b>Alain Lamassoure<\/b>, former Minister (France).<\/p>\n<p>Noting that the ASEM Summit opens on 8 October, anniversary of the <i>\u201cmost brutal and pervasive crackdown launched by the Vietnamese authorities against the banned UBCV\u201d<\/i>, the MEPs deplored that, in spite of an Urgent EP Resolution on 20 November 2003 and repeated international appeals, <i>\u201cVietnam has taken no steps to free these men\u201d<\/i>.
