{"id":186,"date":"2003-04-05T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-04-05T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/queme.org\/en\/vietnam-premier-meets-dissident-buddhist-leader\/"},"modified":"2016-09-09T13:52:29","modified_gmt":"2016-09-09T13:52:29","slug":"vietnam-premier-meets-dissident-buddhist-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/vietnam-premier-meets-dissident-buddhist-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"<i>Kyodo<\/i> : Vietnam premier meets dissident Buddhist leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/home.kyodo.co.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/images\/kyodo1.gif\" alt=\"Kyodo News - http:\/\/home.kyodo.co.jp\/\" width=\"140\" height=\"40\" border=\"0\"><\/a> <span class=date><\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HANOI, April 5 (Kyodo) &#8212; Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai had his first-ever meeting with the leader of the dissident Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam (UBCV) this week, the newspaper Viet Nam News said.<\/p>\n<p>Thic Huyen Quang, who has been under house arrest for more than two decades, met Khai at the premier\u2019s official residence in Hanoi, the official English-language newspaper said.<\/p>\n<p>Viet Nam News said the pair discussed religious freedom in Vietnam during their 45-minute meeting, but it noted Khai failed to say if a ban on religious activity by the UBCV would be lifted.<\/p>\n<p>Local analysts see the dialogue as a furthering of the government\u2019s \u201cDoi Moi\u201d policy of opening up Vietnam and Vo Van Ai, director of the Paris-based International Buddhist Information Bureau, which supports the UBCV, described the meeting as \u201csignificant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sincerely hope these talks will lead to concrete actions such as the release of (monks),\u201d Ai said on his group\u2019s Web site.<\/p>\n<p>After Vietnam\u2019s reunification in 1976, the government was eager to absorb all Buddhist sects into the official Buddhist Church of Vietnam, but the southern-based UBCV resisted the policy, leading to many UBCV monks being dispossessed.<\/p>\n<p>Quang, first arrested in 1982, was only recently permitted to visit Hanoi for medical treatment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; HANOI, April 5 (Kyodo) &#8212; Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai had his first-ever meeting with the leader of the dissident Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam (UBCV) this week, the newspaper Viet Nam News said.
