The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, an FIDH-OMCT joint programme, together with the Vietnam Committee on Human Rights (VCHR), denounce Truong Duy Nhat\u2019s conviction and sentencing and call on the Vietnamese Government to release him and the other human rights defenders who are languishing in jails across the country.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"202\" height=\"223\" src=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2014-0304a.jpg\" alt=\"Truong Duy Nhat\" class=\"wp-image-13460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2014-0304a.jpg 202w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2014-0304a-150x166.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><figcaption>Truong Duy Nhat<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Truong Duy Nhat<\/strong> has been\ndetained since his arrest on May 26, 2013. Police arrested him for publishing\nonline articles critical of the Government on his blog <em>A Different Point of\nView<\/em> Truong Duy Nhat is a former journalist with State-run newspapers <em>\u201cBao\nCong An Quang Nam Danang\u201d (Quang Nam Danang Security Police newspaper)<\/em> and <em>\u201cDai\nDoan Ket\u201d (Great Solidarity newspaper)<\/em>. In 2011, he quit his work as a\nreporter to write for his blog which became widely known for its criticism of\nthe government&nbsp;<a href=\"#note1\">(1)<\/a>. In his blog, Truong Duy Nhat frequently critiqued the performance of top\ngovernment officials, including the Prime Minister, from the point of view of\nthe rights enshrined in Vietnam\u2019s legislation and the international covenants Vietnam\nhas signed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scores of human rights defenders and\ncyber-dissidents are currently serving long prison sentences or awaiting trial\nin Vietnam&nbsp;<a href=\"#note2\">(2)<\/a>. Another blogger, <strong>Pham Viet Dao<\/strong>, arrested in the first semester of\n2013, faces a prison sentence of up to seven years also for <em>\u201cabusing\ndemocratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the State\u201d<\/em>.
