PARIS, 11 October 2016 (VCHR) \u2013 The Vietnam Committee on Human Rights<\/strong> (VCHR) strongly decries the arrest of prominent blogger and human rights defender Ms. Nguy\u1ec5n Ng\u1ecdc Nh\u01b0 Qu\u1ef3nh<\/strong> at her home in Kh\u00e1nh H\u00f2a province on 10 October 2016. Ms. Nh\u01b0 Qu\u1ef3nh, who blogs under the name M\u1eb9 N\u1ea5m (Mother Mushroom), is accused of \u201cspreading propaganda against the Socialist Republic of Vietnam\u201d<\/em> (Article 88 of the Criminal Code). She risks a maximum penalty of 20 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cM\u1eb9 N\u1ea5m simply sought to stimulate debate and a free flow of ideas on diverse issues such as the dangers of Bauxite mining, corruption, social injustice, human rights or the Formosa pollution scandal\u201d<\/em><\/strong> said VCHR President V\u00f5 V\u0103n \u00c1i. \u201cShe is a true crusader, not a criminal, and should be immediately released\u201d.<\/strong>

According to the Vietnamese media, Security Police arrested Nh\u01b0 Qu\u1ef3nh after an investigation into over 400 articles she wrote and posted on Facebook and social networks (over 1,180 pages), and a document entitled \u201cStop Police killing civilians \u2013 SKC\u201d that she had compiled and printed which gave details of 31 cases of people who died in Police custody in Vietnam. Police also seized a poster denouncing the government\u2019s handling of the Formosa affair.<\/p>\n

Accusing her of distorting the truth and inciting the public to oppose the communist government, Kh\u00e1nh H\u00f2a Police said she \u201cput forward pessimistic, one-sided views that upset and confused people\u2019s minds and undermined their trust [in the Party].\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Born on 18 July 1979, Nh\u01b0 Qu\u1ef3nh began blogging in 2006 and became a one of her generation\u2019s leading voices. As a result, she was repeatedly arrested and attacked. In 2014, she was named Human Rights Defender of the Year by the Stockholm-based organization \u201cCivil Rights Defenders.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a report entitled \u201cBloggers and Netizens Behind Bars: Restrictions on Internet Freedom in Vietnam\u201d, <\/strong>VCHR and FIDH published an article from M\u1eb9 N\u1ea5m\u2019s blog on the repression of anti-China demonstrations, in which she wrote:<\/p>\n

“A few hundred people out of 90 millions who demonstrate for the love of their country. Who are they? They are not heroes. They are aware of the risks they are taking, but they have a longing in their hearts. They must do what they can to dispel fear amongst those around them, so that more and more people will step out of the shadows and join with them to shape our nation\u2019s future.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em>\u201cFor the greatest danger facing the Vietnamese people today is fear \u2013 the fear inside each person\u2019s heart that is slowly, inexorably stifling our vitality and our very future.<\/em><\/strong> Dispelling this fear is the most urgent challenge we face. If we can\u2019t solve this problem, there is no point talking about democracy, independence or preserving national sovereignty. The destiny of Vietnam is in our own hands.
