According to reports received from the UBCV, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9, who is in very poor health, called L\u00ea C\u00f4ng C\u1ea7u, UBCV Secretary-general and head of the Buddhist Youth Movement yesterday (Sunday 14<sup>th<\/sup> May), asking him to come urgently to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to discuss his health situation and related UBCV affairs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>L\u00ea C\u00f4ng C\u1ea7u<\/strong>, who lives in Hu\u1ebf, immediately purchased a plane ticket and was ready to travel to Saigon today, 15<sup>th<\/sup> May 2017. However, the Security Police, who monitor the telephones of both Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 and L\u00ea C\u00f4ng C\u1ea7u, intercepted the communication. Yesterday evening, Security Police came to L\u00ea C\u00f4ng C\u1ea7u\u2019s home in Hu\u1ebf and prohibited him travelling. Indeed, they forbade him from stepping outside his home on any pretext, even to buy food. The Police had no official orders, and refused to give any explication for this ban. L\u00ea C\u00f4ng C\u1ea7u strongly denounces this arbitrary Police action, and is beginning a hunger strike from today until 22<sup>nd<\/sup> May in protest. As <a href=\"http:\/\/queme.org\/en\/police-threaten-harass-ubcv-buddhists-youth-leaders-vesak-celebrations-hue\/\">VCHR has reported<\/a>, just last week Security Police harassed and interrogated L\u00ea C\u00f4ng C\u1ea7u and other members of the UBCV\u2019s Buddhist Youth Movement as they prepared to celebrate the Vesak (Birth of Buddha) in Hu\u1ebf.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cHanoi has detained Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 for decades, without any justification or charge\u201d,<\/em><\/strong> said VCHR President V\u00f5 V\u0103n \u00c1i. <strong><em>\u201cToday, when his health is failing, Police prevent him from receiving support from his followers. Vietnam should be ashamed of its base and inhumane treatment of Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9, a Buddhist monk and scholar who is respected the world over for his life-long devotion to the cause of religious freedom, human rights and democracy in Vietnam\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Vietnam Committee on Human Rights calls on all governments, the United Nations, international institutions and civil society organizations to press Vietnam to lift all restrictions on Most Venerable Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 and guarantee his right to communicate freely and receive visits from UBCV members; immediately lift the travel ban on L\u00ea C\u00f4ng C\u1ea7u and enable him to visit Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9, in conformity with Vietnam\u2019s international obligations as a state party to the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS, 15h May 2017 (VCHR) \u2013 The Vietnam Committee on Human Rights (VCHR) strongly protests the inhumane attitude of the Vietnamese government regarding Most Venerable Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9, 89 year-old Patriarch of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam (UBCV).
