Sixteen times nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, he won worldwide recognition for his non-violent actions for freedom in Vietnam. His refusal to be silenced by intimidation, imprisonment and internal exile for over four decades has inspired Vietnamese of all generations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was the first person to forge links of solidarity between dissidents from the north and south, thus bridging a decades-long geographical and ideological divide. He was also an eminent scholar, former lecturer in oriental philosophy and Buddhist studies, and well-known writer, with over a dozen published works including novels, poetry, translations and studies of Vietnamese Buddhism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Th\u00edch\nQu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was born on 27 November 1928 in Thanh Ch\u00e2u village in Th\u00e0i B\u00ecnh\nprovince (northern Vietnam). He became a monk at the age of 14. In <strong>1945,<\/strong>\nwhen he was just 17, he witnessed the summary\nexecution of his religious master by a revolutionary People\u2019s Tribunal. <em>\u201cAt\nthat precise moment\u201d,<\/em> wrote Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 in an Open letter to Communist\nParty Secretary-general \u0110\u1ed7 M\u01b0\u1eddi in 1994, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>I vowed to combat fanaticism\nand intolerance in all its forms, and<\/em> <em>devote my life to the\npursuit of justice through the Buddhist teachings of non-violence, tolerance\nand compassion. I have never regretted this decision. But little did I realise\nhow this simple vow would lead me down a path paved with prison cells, torture,\ninternal exile and detention for so many years. I soon learned that all tyrants\nfear the truth, and one must be ready to pay the price \u2013 sometimes a very high\nprice \u2013 to defend the convictions and values one believes to be right\u201d.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An\noutstanding scholar and talented writer, from <strong>1951-1957<\/strong>, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\nspent 6 years as a Research Fellow of Buddhist and Indian philosophy at several\nuniversities in Sri Lanka and India, including the Vishava Bharati University\nin Santiniteketan, Bengal. During the <strong>1960-70s,<\/strong> he was Professor of\nOriental Philosophy and Buddhist Studies at V\u1ea1n H\u1ea1nh Buddhist University\n(Saigon), the Faculty of Letters of Saigon University and the H\u00f2a H\u1ea3o Buddhist\nUniversity in Can Tho. In <strong>1971-72<\/strong>, he taught Buddhist studies at the\nPontifical College Pius X in Dalat. Despite his exile and banishment by the\ncommunist authorities in 1982, his scholarship and vision earned him widespread\nrespect, even in Communist Party circles. In the official magazine <em>V\u0103n H\u1ecdc<\/em>\n(Literary Studies, N<sup>o<\/sup> 4, Hanoi, July- August 1992), Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\nis highly praised for his wisdom and extensive knowledge by a communist scholar\nwho visited him during his years in internal exile in Vu Doai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/1963-thichquang-do-rally-religious-freedom-saigon.jpg\" alt=\"Thich Quang Do speaks at a rally for religious freedom in Saigon, 1963\" class=\"wp-image-42671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/1963-thichquang-do-rally-religious-freedom-saigon.jpg 480w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/1963-thichquang-do-rally-religious-freedom-saigon-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/1963-thichquang-do-rally-religious-freedom-saigon-110x75.jpg 110w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/1963-thichquang-do-rally-religious-freedom-saigon-150x103.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption>Thich Quang Do speaks at a rally for religious freedom in Saigon, 1963<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\u2019s convictions led him to oppose\nauthoritarianism under different political regimes. After Vietnam was partitioned\nby the <strong>1954 <\/strong>Geneva Agreement, he became a prominent figure in the\nprotest movement against the anti-Buddhist policies of the Ng\u00f4 D\u00ecnh Di\u1ec7m regime\nin the South. On the night of <strong>20 August 1963<\/strong>, he was arrested along with\nthousands of Buddhists\nin a massive Police sweep\nlaunched by the Diem government in Hue and Saigon. Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was brutally\ntortured. Yet he continued resistance in prison, secretly translating articles\nfrom the international press on the Buddhist struggle which were smuggled in by\nBuddhists with his meals. Released after the fall of the Diem regime on <strong>1<sup>st<\/sup>\nNovember<\/strong>, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\u2019s health was seriously damaged by the brutal\ntorture. He suffered from tuberculosis for three years, and was sent to Japan\nin 1966 for a lung operation. Before returning to Vietnam, he spent two years\ntravelling and studying in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand and Burma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the <strong>Unified\nBuddhist Church of Vietnam<\/strong> (UBCV) regained its legitimate status in 1964, Th\u00edch\nQu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was appointed UBCV Spokesman and Inspector of the UBCV\u2019s Executive Institute (<em>Vi\u1ec7n\nH\u00f3a \u0110\u1ea1o, <\/em>the Institute for the Dissemination of the Dharma) in <strong>1972.<\/strong>\nHe became the Institute\u2019sSecretary-general in 1974. Throughout the\nVietnam War, along with other UBCV leaders, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 took an active\nstance in favour of peace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Communists\ntook power in <strong>1975,<\/strong> a fierce campaign to suppress Buddhism was launched\nin South Vietnam. UBCV property was confiscated, its institutions dismantled,\nthousands of monks were arrested or forcibly drafted into the army. As the UBCV\nSecretary-general, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 sent thousands of letters to the authorities\nprotesting specific cases of religious repression. All copies of the letters\nwere destroyed in July 1982 when Police seized the UBCV\u2019s headquarters at \u1ea4n\nQuang Pagoda. That day, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 signed a\nCommuniqu\u00e9 summoning all Buddhists to prepare for a non-violent struggle to\ndefend the UBCV and protect religious freedom. This led to his arrest in <strong>April\n1977<\/strong>, along with Th\u00edch Huy\u1ec1n Quang and several UBCV leaders on charges of <em>\u201canti-revolutionary activities\u201d<\/em> and\n<em>\u201cundermining national solidarity\u201d.<\/em> Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was detained in solitary confinement in\nPhan Dang Luu Prison for 20 months. Following international pressure, he was\nreleased after a brief trial on 10<sup>th<\/sup> December 1978. The same year, Th\u00edch\nHuy\u1ec1n Quang and Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by\nIrish laureates Betty Williams and Mairead Maguire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>25<sup>th<\/sup>\nFebruary 1982<\/strong>, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was again arrested for opposing the creation\nof the State-sponsored \u201cVietnam Buddhist Church\u201d, an organization controlled by\nthe Communist Party\u2019s \u201cVietnam Fatherland Front\u201d, and for resisting efforts to\nmake the UBCV join this State-run body. He was sent into internal exile in the\nremote village of V\u0169 \u0110\u00f2ai in Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh Province (northern Vietnam), where he\nspent 10 years under house arrest. The only reason given\nfor detention was <em>&#8220;by carrying out\nreligious activities, you are <\/em>ipso facto<em>\nengaged in political activities&#8221;.<\/em> His 84-year-old mother was exiled\nwith him. She died in 1985 from malnutrition and lack of medical care. In 1990,\nthe Minister of Public Security Mai Ch\u00ed Th\u1ecd, one of the regime\u2019s most powerful\nfigures, invited Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 to take up a post in the State-sponsored\nVietnam Buddhist Church in Hanoi. Shocked by the government\u2019s widespread campaign to\nsuppress the UBCV, in <strong>August 1994<\/strong>, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 set up a sign on his\nMonastery inscribed \u201c<em>Exiled Secretariat of the Unified Buddhist Church of\nVietnam\u201d<\/em> and called on Buddhists all over the country to restore UBCV\nnameplates torn down by the Communist authorities. The same year, he sent an\nOpen Letter to VCP Secretary-general \u0110\u1ed7 M\u01b0\u1eddi along with a 44-page document\nentitled <strong>&#8220;<em>Observations on the\ngrave offences committed by the Vietnamese Communist Party against the\nVietnamese people and against Buddhism&#8221;,<\/em><\/strong> detailing persecution\nagainst Buddhism since 1945. A copy was smuggled to the UBCV\u2019s International\nSpokesman in Paris, V\u00f5 V\u0103n \u00c1i, requesting that he publish it within 6 months if\nthe government made no reply. In <strong>1994,<\/strong> Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 also began\norganizing the UBCV\u2019s activities, mounting a rescue mission for victims of\ndisastrous floods in the Mekong Delta which had left 500,000 people homeless.\nThis was the very first public UBCV mission since the church was banned in\n1981. Police intercepted the UBCV convoy as it prepared to leave Saigon on 5\nNovember 1994, confiscated all relief aid and arrested the organizers. Th\u00edch\nQu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was arrested on January 4, 1995. He was put on trial as a <em>\u201cVietnamese\ndelinquent\u201d,<\/em> not as a Buddhist monk.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"313\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2017\/07\/tqd_c.jpg\" alt=\"Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 is sentenced to 5 years in prison at the Ho Chi Minh City Supreme People\u2019s Court on 15 August 1995, Photo AP\" class=\"wp-image-35935\" srcset=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2017\/07\/tqd_c.jpg 313w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2017\/07\/tqd_c-150x204.jpg 150w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2017\/07\/tqd_c-221x300.jpg 221w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><figcaption>Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 is sentenced to 5 years in prison at the Ho Chi Minh City Supreme People\u2019s Court on 15 August 1995, Photo AP<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For\nthese \u201ccrimes\u201d, on <strong>August 15, 1995<\/strong>, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was sentenced to 5\nyears in prison and 5 years house arrest on charges of &#8220;<em>sabotaging\nnational solidarity\u201d <\/em>and <em>\u201ctaking advantage of democratic freedoms to\nviolate the interests of the State and social organizations\u201d.<\/em> Initially\ndetained in Ba Sao Camp, he was transferred to the notorious B14 Prison near\nHanoi, one of Vietnam\u2019s harshest prisons. Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\u2019s health deteriorated due\nto harsh conditions and lack of medical care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Th\u00edch\nQu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\u2019s arrest sparked off strong international protests among human rights\ngroups across the globe. Four Nobel Prize Winners (HH the Dalai Lama, Jos\u00e9\nRamos-Horta, Mairead Corrigan Maguire and Fran\u00e7ois Jacob) formed a support\ncommittee for his release. The then US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright\nalso demanded his unconditional release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/nobel-laureates-support-thq-tqd.jpg\" alt=\"Four Nobel Peace Prize laureates set up a Committee for the Release of Th\u00edch Huy\u1ec1n Quang, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 and other UBCV leaders\" class=\"wp-image-42689\" width=\"599\" height=\"638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/nobel-laureates-support-thq-tqd.jpg 798w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/nobel-laureates-support-thq-tqd-281x300.jpg 281w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/nobel-laureates-support-thq-tqd-768x819.jpg 768w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/nobel-laureates-support-thq-tqd-150x160.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><figcaption>Four Nobel Peace Prize laureates set up a Committee for the Release of Th\u00edch Huy\u1ec1n Quang, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 and other UBCV leaders<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As a\nresult, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was released in a government amnesty on <strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup>\nSeptember 1998.<\/strong> He returned to the Thanh Minh Zen Monastery in Saigon, but\nwas placed under house arrest and strict Police surveillance, with his phone\ncut and all visits monitored &#8211; <em>\u201cI have<\/em>\n<em>left a small prison only to come into a\nlarger one\u201d, <\/em>he said. In <strong>October 1998,<\/strong> the UN Special Rapporteur on\nReligious Intolerance, Abdelfattah Amor was physically impeded from visiting Th\u00edch\nQu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 by Security Police. Despite these restrictions, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\ncontinued his peaceful combat by writing appeals in a spirit of dialogue to the\nVietnamese leadership for the respect of human rights, the release of prisoners\nof conscience, the abolition of the death penalty, and national reconciliation\nbetween Vietnamese of all different opinions. In <strong>2000, <\/strong>he personally<strong> <\/strong>led a relief mission\nto aid flood victims in the Mekong Delta. These efforts brought him renewed\narrests, interrogations, harassment and accusations of <em>\u201cviolating national\nsecurity\u201d.<\/em> He also made frequent attempts to visit the Patriarch Th\u00edch\nHuy\u1ec1n Quang, under house arrest in Qu\u1ea3ng Ng\u00e3i and B\u00ecnh \u0110\u1ecbnh, but was\nsystematically intercepted. The Appeal received overwhelming support, with endorsements of over 300,000 Vietnamese, and over 200 MEPs, Members of the US Congress and international personalities. The government reacted by sentencing Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 (without trial) to two years \u201cadministrative detention\u201d on <strong>June 1<sup>st<\/sup> 2001<\/strong>. He was detained <em>incommunicado <\/em>at theThanh Minh Zen Monastery, deprived even of medical treatment for his diabetes and high blood pressure. Euro-MP Olivier Dupuis staged a demonstration outside the Monastery in protest on <strong>June 6<sup>th<\/sup> 2001.<\/strong> He was arrested and expelled from Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Released\non <strong>June 27<sup>th<\/sup> 2003<\/strong> as a result of concerted international\npressure, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was arrested again along with Th\u00edch Huy\u1ec1n Quang and\nseveral other UBCV leaders on <strong>October 8<sup>th<\/sup> 2003<\/strong> after he\nparticipated in the UBCV Assembly convened by Patriarch Th\u00edch Huy\u1ec1n Quang to\nelect a new UBCV leadership. Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 and Th\u00edch Huy\u1ec1n Quang were never\nformally charged, but were accused of <em>\u201cpossessing state secrets\u201d<\/em> \u2013 an\noffence which carries the death penalty in Vietnam \u2013 and placed under strict\nsurveillance at their respective monasteries. The US Congress and European Parliament adopted simultaneous\nResolutions condemning the crackdown and calling for the immediate release of\nthe new UBCV leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"419\" src=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/1999-thichhuyen-thichquangdo-quang-ngai.jpg\" alt=\"Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 visits Th\u00edch Huy\u1ec1n Quang in 1999 in Qu\u1ea3ng Ng\u00e3i where he is under house arrest. In a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/video-message-from-thich-quang-do-to-the-un-commission-on-human-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"video message (opens in a new tab)\">video message<\/a><\/strong> addressed to the <strong>United Nations <\/strong>in April 2005, he argued that even economic development was untenable without democracy and freedom: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cWhat can we do to bring stability, well-being and development to the people of Vietnam? During my long years in detention, I have thought deeply, and I have come to the conclusion that there is only one way \u2013 we must have true freedom and democracy. We must have pluralism, the right to hold free elections, to choose our own political system, to enjoy democratic freedoms \u2013 in brief, the right to shape our own future, and the destiny of our nation. Without democracy and pluralism, we cannot combat poverty and injustice, nor bring true development and progress to our people. Without democracy and pluralism, we cannot guarantee human rights, for human rights cannot be protected without the safeguards of democratic institutions and the rule of law\u201d.&nbsp; <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jbgrUePd_zU\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police seized the video and\narrested the young monk who filmed it. However, the UBCV network managed to\nsmuggle out an audio version, which was shown by V\u00f5 V\u0103n \u00c1i at the United\nNations Human Rights Commission in Geneva in April 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/buddhist-dissident-thich-quang-do-appeals-to-the-vietnamese-intelligentsia-to-rally-together-for-democracy-and-pluralism-in-vietnam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"\u201cNew Year\u2019s Letter for Pluralism and Democracy\u201d (opens in a new tab)\">\u201cNew Year\u2019s Letter for Pluralism and Democracy\u201d<\/a><\/strong> (February 2005) was an unprecedented call for unity, and it represented a turning point in Vietnam\u2019s democracy movement. Addressed to Vietnamese Communist Party and military veterans, academics close to the VCP, human rights defenders, cyber-dissidents and democracy activists from all walks of life, this was the first time a UBCV leader had reached out to citizens outside the Buddhists community, and it had a resounding impact, especially on the dissident community in Hanoi. Leading VCP veteran and dissident Hoang Minh Chinh was particularly inspired by Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\u2019s proposals. Indeed, just before his death in 2008 of prostate cancer, this life-long atheist asked Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 to convert him to Buddhism and be his master. At Hoang Minh Chinh\u2019s funeral in Hanoi in February 2008, monks from the banned UBCV led the funeral rites, and situation unheard of in Communist Vietnam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>2006, <\/strong>the Rafto Foundation in Norway awarded\nTh\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9the\nprestigious <strong>&#8220;Thorolf Rafto Memorial Prize&#8221;, <\/strong>honouring him for<em>\u201chis personal courage and\nperseverance through three <br>\ndecades of peaceful opposition against the communist regime in Vietnam, and as\na symbol for the growing democracy movement\u201d.<\/em>&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/vo-van-ai-receives-2006-rafto-prize-in-bergen-norway-on-behalf-of-buddhist-dissident-venerable-thich-quang-do\/\">Vietnam refused to let Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 travel to Norway<\/a> to receive the Prize, despite repeated requests from\nthe Norwegian government. He asked V\u00f5 V\u0103n \u00c1i, UBCV Spokesman, to accept the\nPrize on his behalf. Hanoi also turned down the request by Rafto Chairman, Arne\nLynng\u00e5rd to meet Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9, and in March 2007 Security\nPolice arrested and interrogated Rafto\u2019s Therese Jebsen as she came to Thanh\nMinh Zen Monastery to hand Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 the Award Diploma. In <strong>April 2006<\/strong>,\nTh\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was awarded\nthe <strong><em>\u201cDemocracy Courage Tribute\u201d<\/em><\/strong> by the World Movement for\nDemocracy along with dissident Ho\u00e0ng Minh Ch\u00ednh at their 4<sup>th<\/sup>\nAssembly in Istanbul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2006-norwegian-press-rafto-prize-thichquangdo.jpg\" alt=\"The Norwegian media reports Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\u2019s Rafto Prize in 2006\" class=\"wp-image-42696\" width=\"600\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2006-norwegian-press-rafto-prize-thichquangdo.jpg 480w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2006-norwegian-press-rafto-prize-thichquangdo-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2006-norwegian-press-rafto-prize-thichquangdo-150x108.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>The Norwegian media reports Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\u2019s Rafto Prize in 2006<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview on Radio Free Asia, speaking on the\neve of the Communist Party\u2019s 10<sup>th<\/sup> Congress in 2006, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\nmade the following comments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cThere will come a time when the authorities will be unable to silence all of the people all of the time. The moment will come when the people will rise up, like water bursting its banks. Together, 80 million Vietnamese will speak with one voice to demand democracy and human rights. The government will be unable to ignore their demands, and will have to face up to this reality. Then, the situation in Vietnam will be forced to change, and a democratic process will emerge\u201d.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 pledged the UBCV\u2019s support to all peaceful movements for social justice and reform. In <strong>July 2007<\/strong>, he broke out of house arrest to speak at a demonstration of <a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/thich-quang-do-addresses-farmers-demonstrating-in-saigon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">\u201c<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/thich-quang-do-addresses-farmers-demonstrating-in-saigon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Victims of Injustice\u201d,<\/a><\/em> a movement of farmers and peasants protesting official corruption and State confiscation of lands. This was the first time in 26 years he had addressed a crowd in public. It was also the first time in Communist Vietnam that such a prominent dissident had spoken out publicly for democracy and human rights. His words at the demonstration, surrounded by Security Police, were truly courageous:&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cOne single party cannot possibly represent more than 80 million Vietnamese people. We must have a multi-party system that gives the people wide representation. Freedom of expression is especially important, for without this freedom, how can people voice their grievances and express their opinions? First of all, we must settle the pressing questions of demanding justice, land rights and compensation for farmers. But after that, we must all work together for human rights, democracy and freedom. Everyone must do his part. We must work together until we succeed in winning pluralism and human rights for all the Vietnamese people. There can be no justice under a one-Party State\u201d.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"449\" src=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2007-0717-thichquangdo-victimsofinjustice-saigon.jpg\" alt=\"Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 addresses the \u201cVictims of Injustice\u201d demonstrating in Saigon in July 2007\" class=\"wp-image-42717\" srcset=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2007-0717-thichquangdo-victimsofinjustice-saigon.jpg 600w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2007-0717-thichquangdo-victimsofinjustice-saigon-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2007-0717-thichquangdo-victimsofinjustice-saigon-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 addresses the \u201cVictims of Injustice\u201d demonstrating in Saigon in July 2007<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The State-controlled media\nlaunched a vicious campaign against Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 after this, accusing him of <em>\u201cinciting people to oppose the government\u201d<\/em>,\nbeing a <em>\u201cgang leader with wicked designs\u201d,<\/em> seeking to <em>\u201cdisturb public\norder\u201d<\/em> and oppose the Communist Party. He did not step down on his\nprinciples however, and launched a fund-raising campaign to support the <em>\u201cVictims\nof Injustice. <\/em>In <strong>2007,<\/strong> Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 initiated a kind of \u201cGrameen\nBank\u201d, providing micro-credit loans to the families of activists who had lost\ntheir means of subsistence because of their pro-democracy activities. These\nunderground programmes are administered by more than 20 UBCV Provincial\nRepresentative Boards set up by Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 since 2005 all over central and\nsouthern Vietnam to provide spiritual and material aid to the poor. The members\nof these UBCV Boards suffer persistent harassment, threats and interrogations,\nbut are nevertheless realizing in concrete ways the UBCV\u2019s ideals of compassion\nand salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\u2019s vision of democracy, articulated in\nhis appeals and Open Letters for democracy, extends far beyond Vietnam\u2019s\nfrontiers. He believes in a peaceful and democratic Vietnam that will help\nengender peace and stability in Asia and the world, which can be achieved\nthrough solidarity and cooperation. In <strong>September 2007<\/strong>, during the brutal\ncrackdown on Buddhist monks and civilians in Burma, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 wrote to UN\nSecretary General Ban Ki-moon calling for emergency UN action to stop the\nviolence, and addressed a message of solidarity to the Burmese people. In <strong>March\n2008<\/strong>, following the violent repression of demonstrations in Tibet, he sent\na letter of solidarity to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, calling on China to open\ntalks with the Tibetan leader, stressing that <em>\u201conly dialogue, never\ndestruction, can open the way to a lasting solution in Tibet\u201d. <\/em>&nbsp;in <strong>September 2008, <\/strong>he wrote a letter of\nsupport to Buddhists in South Korea calling on the government to adopt\nanti-discrimination laws. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>December 2007<\/strong>, in the wake of widespread demonstrations staged by students and young people in Vietnam protesting China\u2019s claims of sovereignty on the disputed Spratly and Paracel archipelagos, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 <a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/as-tensions-rise-over-chinese-claims-of-sovereignty-on-the-paracel-and-spratly-islands-buddhist-dissident-thich-quang-do-calls-for-democratic-rights-and-freedoms-to-guarantee-territorial-integrit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">issued a Declaration<\/a> calling on the Communist Party to abolish Article 4 of the Constitution (on the mastery of the Communist Party) and consult the Vietnamese population on this issue. The best way to safeguard Vietnam\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity, he said, was to <em>\u201cpass the reins of power to the people in a society based on the separation of the three powers, multi-party democracy and the rule of law\u201d.<\/em> He added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cThree million Communist Party members and a 500,000-strong army have neither the authority nor the power to defend the homeland by military means, nor sufficient prestige and courage to expand political and diplomatic efforts to mobilize international support in our defence\u2026 they need the full participation of the 85 million Vietnamese population and the support of the Vietnamese Diaspora worldwide\u201d.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>29th April 2008<\/strong>,\nas the Olympic Torch relay arrived in Saigon, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 attempted to join\na protest organized by young Vietnamese. However, Police blocked all\ndemonstrations. Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 expressed his deception in an interview for\nRadio Free Asia:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cIn Vietnam today, young Chinese can proudly parade their flag. Whereas young Vietnamese, the children of this land, whose ancestors shed their blood to preserve our territory, civilisation and identity, are forbidden by their own government, on their own soil, from expressing their national pride and protesting this indignity\u201d (\u2026). \u201cWe must reclaim our sovereignty on the Spratly and Paracel Islands. If 85 million Vietnamese remain silent and submissive, we will lose everything. Before we realize it, it will be too late. Vietnam has already lost part of the Nam Quan Border Pass to China and much more. If we do not resist, we could lose our sovereignty again. Not just for a few decades. Remember, in our history, we were under Chinese domination for 1,000 years\u201d.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>August 2008<\/strong>, following the death of former Patriarch Th\u00edch Huy\u1ec1n Quang on 5 July 2008, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 became the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/thich-quang-do-is-appointed-new-leader-of-the-unified-buddhist-church-of-vietnam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Fifth Supreme Patriarch of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam<\/a><\/strong>. At his funeral on 11 July, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 pledged before his coffin to continue the movement for human rights and religious freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although he was never convicted of any crime &#8211; <em>\u201cI live in a legal limbo\u201d,<\/em> he said &#8211; Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 remained under effective house arrest at the Thanh Minh Zen Monastery in Saigon until 2018. Despite harassments, threats and close Police surveillance, he continued to challenge the authorities on a range of human rights issues. In <strong>2006,<\/strong> he urged the government to allow the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/on-the-eve-of-the-10th-national-congress-of-the-communist-party-of-vietnam-buddhist-leader-thich-quang-do-calls-for-the-creation-of-a-free-trade-union-to-protect-worker-rights-in-vietnam\/\" target=\"_blank\">creation of free trade unions<\/a> to protect workers from growing abuses of labour rights under Hanoi\u2019s policy of \u201c\u0111oi moi\u201d, or economic liberalization. He launched a campaign of Civil Disobedience to protest environmentally-damaging Bauxite mining in the Central Highlands <strong>(2010);<\/strong> denounced trafficking of women and called for the <a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/on-the-occasion-of-international-womens-day-ubcv-leader-thich-quang-do-calls-on-three-prominent-women-to-lead-a-joint-initiative-for-human-rights-and-democracy-in-vietnam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">release of detained women activists<\/a> in Vietnam on the occasion of International Women\u2019s Day; supported thousands of young people in Hanoi and Saigon demonstrating against Chinese encroachment on Vietnamese lands <strong>(2011);<\/strong> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/queme.org\/en\/buddhist-leader-thich-quang-do-issues-a-declaration-on-pluralism-and-democracy-in-vietnam\" target=\"_blank\">called for multi-party democracy and the abrogation of Article 4 of the Constitution<\/a> on the political monopoly of the Communist Party during a government consultation on constitutional reform <strong>(2013); <\/strong>launched <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/queme.org\/en\/buddhist-leader-thich-quang-do-denounces-chinas-violations-of-vietnamese-territorial-waters\" target=\"_blank\">an appeal for a <em>\u201cbroad-based movement for the democratisation of Vietnam\u201d <\/em><\/a>as the sole way to protect Vietnamese sovereignty <strong>(2014). <\/strong>These efforts brought him renewed interrogations, harassment and accusations of <em>\u201cviolating national security\u201d.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his house arrest, many international figures who sought to visit Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 were prevented from meeting him or subjected to Police harassments and interrogation. Police prevented the UN Special Rapporteur on Religious Intolerance Abdelfattah Amor from visiting him during a visit to Vietnam in 1998; <a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/therese-jebsen-of-rafto-foundation-is-arrested-whilst-visiting-thich-quang-do-in-saigon\/\"><strong>Therese Jebsen<\/strong>,<\/a> Director of the Rafto Foundation, was arrested as she attempted to hand him the Rafto Award Diploma on <strong>15th March 2007<\/strong>; Italian Senator <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/as-they-prepare-to-board-a-plane-to-saigon-hanoi-prohibits-visit-by-euro-mp-marco-pannella-and-italian-senator-marco-perduca-to-vietnam\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marco Perduca<\/a><\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/as-they-prepare-to-board-a-plane-to-saigon-hanoi-prohibits-visit-by-euro-mp-marco-pannella-and-italian-senator-marco-perduca-to-vietnam\/\" target=\"_blank\"> and MEP <\/a><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/as-they-prepare-to-board-a-plane-to-saigon-hanoi-prohibits-visit-by-euro-mp-marco-pannella-and-italian-senator-marco-perduca-to-vietnam\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marco Pannella<\/a><\/strong> were prevented from boarding a plane in Phnom Penh to travel to Saigon to meet Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 in <strong>December 2009<\/strong>; a Japanese monk who visited him in 2010 was fined $1,000 at the airport as he left Vietnam. <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/at-a-hearing-on-human-rights-and-religious-freedom-at-the-us-congress-ubcv-spokesman-vo-van-ai-tells-congress-us-based-activist-is-assaulted-for-visiting-thich-quang-do-ubcv-monks-protest\/\" target=\"_blank\">Thor Halversson<\/a><\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/at-a-hearing-on-human-rights-and-religious-freedom-at-the-us-congress-ubcv-spokesman-vo-van-ai-tells-congress-us-based-activist-is-assaulted-for-visiting-thich-quang-do-ubcv-monks-protest\/\" target=\"_blank\">,<\/a> President of the New York-based Human Rights Foundation was assaulted and detained by Police after he clandestinely filmed an interview with Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 at the Thanh Minh Zen Monastery on <strong>16th March 2010<\/strong>. Fortunately, he managed to send the video out of Vietnam. It was shown at the Oslo Freedom Forum in April 2010 under the title <strong>\u201cForbidden Faith in Vietnam\u201d.<\/strong> It can be seen on <a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/thich-quang-forbidden-faith-vietnam-oslo-freedom-forum-28-april-2010\/\">Qu\u00ea Me and IBIB\u2019s<\/a> website: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.queme.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">www.queme.org<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\u2019s international standing and symbolism as a leader of the movement for democracy and human rights led him to receive visits from many high-level diplomatic delegations, including the Ambassadors of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/eu-and-uk-ambassadors-visit-thich-quang-do-in-ho-chi-minh-city-ubcv-monk-thich-vien-phuong-receives-heavy-fine-for-filming-video-message-by-thich-quang-do-to-the-un-human-rights-commission-in-geneva\/\" target=\"_blank\">United Kingdom and the European Union<\/a> (2005), the Ambassador of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/australian-ambassador-hugh-borrowman-visits-buddhist-patriarch-thich-quang-do\/\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a> (2012), successive US Ambassadors (2012, 2017) and the current US Ambassador Daniel J. Kritenbrink in June 2018. Other visits included US Assistant Secretary of State <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/us-assistant-secretary-of-state-tom-malinowski-visits-detained-buddhist-patriarch-thich-quang-do\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Malinowsky<\/a> (2015), US Congress members Chris Smith, Ed Royce, Loretta Sanchez, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/u-s-congressional-delegation-visits-dissident-buddhist-patriarch-thich-quang-do-in-vietnam\/?v=11aedd0e4327\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Salmon, Alan Lowenthal<\/a> (2005-2016), Consular officials from Germany and France, the UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Religion or Belief <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/despite-impediments-and-surveillance-un-religious-freedom-expert-visits-buddhist-leader-thich-quang-do-in-vietnam\/?v=11aedd0e4327\" target=\"_blank\">Heiner Bielefeldt<\/a> (2014), democracy expert Larry Diamond and the <a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/us-commission-on-international-religious-freedom-visits-detained-buddhist-leader-thich-quang-do-in-vietnam\/?v=11aedd0e4327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">US Commission on International Religious Freedom<\/a> (2009, 2015, 2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In September 2018, <\/strong>Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 <a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/thich-quang-do-expelled-from-the-thanh-minh-zen-monastery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">was expelled<\/a> from Thanh Minh Zen Monastery in Saigon by the monastery\u2019s Superior monk Thich Thanh Minh, who said his presence caused <em>\u201cpolitical and economic problems to the monastery\u201d.<\/em> Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 left immediately, taking with him only a small suit-case with three monk\u2019s robes. When his assistant came back later in the day to collect his sutras, books and belongings, Th\u00edch Thanh Minh had locked the staircase leading to his room and prevented the young monk from taking anything. For the next month, Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9, then 91 years old, moved from one pagoda to another in Saigon with no permanent place to stay. <strong>In October 2018<\/strong>, he decided to go to his home village in Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh province, northern Vietnam. On arriving there, however, he found himself under a new form of house arrest. He managed to escape from the North and came back to Saigon. He was to remain at the Tu Hieu Pagoda under close surveillance, deprived of the means to communicate independently and isolated from his close followers until his death on 22 February 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hVPsR18GGu4\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>International\nawards and support<\/em><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Th\u00edch\nQu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was nominated 16 times for the Nobel Peace Prize. He was awarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/queme.org\/en\/vo-van-ai-receives-2006-rafto-prize-in-bergen-norway-on-behalf-of-buddhist-dissident-venerable-thich-quang-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Rafto Memorial Prize <\/strong><\/a>by the Norwegian Rafto\nFoundation in 2006 for his role as a <em>\u201cunifying force\u201d <\/em>and a \u201c<em>symbol\nof the growing democracy movement in Vietnam<\/em>\u201d, the <a href=\"http:\/\/queme.org\/en\/at-the-world-movement-for-democracys-fourth-assembly-in-istanbul-world-movement-for-democracy-awards-democracy-courage-tribute-to-vietnamese-dissidents-thich-quang-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u201cDemocracy Courage Tribute\u201d<\/strong><\/a> by the\nWorld Movement for Democracy in 2006, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/queme.org\/en\/people-in-need-foundation-grants-homo-homini-award-to-venerables-thich-huyen-quang-thich-quang-do-and-father-nguyen-van-ly-former-president-vaclav-havel-sends-a-message-of-solidarity-to-hum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u201cHomo Homini\u201d<\/strong><\/a> Prize by the Czech\nFoundation People in Need 2003, under the auspices of the late President Vaclav\nHavel. In 2001 he received the Hellman-Hammet\nAward for persecuted writers from Human Rights Watch. Th\u00edch\nQu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 was adopted by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience, and was\nan honorary member of PEN Clubs in Germany, France and Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bIq7q06bpWU\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout his decades in detention, the international community ceaselessly appealed for Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\u2019s release. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention pronounced his detention to be a violation of international law (Opinion 18\/2005). The European Parliament and the US Congress adopted numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/european-parliament-strongly-condemns-abuses-of-freedom-of-expression-assembly-and-religion-in-vietnam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Resolutions<\/a> condemning his detention and demanding his unconditional release. In November 2015, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/queme.org\/en\/letter-to-u-s-president-barack-obama90-international-personalities-and-csos-call-for-the-immediate-and-unconditional-release-of-vietnamese-prisoner-buddhist-monk-and-dissident-thich-quang-do\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>91 international personalities<\/strong><\/a>, including four Nobel Peace Prize laureates, signed a letter to US President Obama calling for his freedom. In <strong>April 2018,<\/strong> US Congressman <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/queme.org\/en\/congressman-alan-lowenthal-uscirf-kristina-arriaga-adopt-thich-quang-do\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Alan Lowenthal <\/strong><\/a>and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/queme.org\/en\/congressman-alan-lowenthal-uscirf-kristina-arriaga-adopt-thich-quang-do\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Kristina Arriaga<\/strong><\/a>, Vice-President of the US Commission for International Religious Freedom adopted Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9 as a prisoner of conscience through the \u201cDefending Freedoms Project\u201d of the US Congress\u2019 Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the news of his death on 22 February 2020, international personalities, religious leaders and admirers from all over the world sent <a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/international-community-pays-tribute-to-thich-quang-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">messages<\/a> mourning the passing of Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng \u0110\u1ed9\u2019s written works include :<\/em><\/strong><em> <strong>Deliverance from bondage<\/strong><\/em> (novel) &#8211; <strong><em>Under the eaves of the derelict pagoda<\/em><\/strong> (novel) &#8211; <strong><em>Buddhist legends<\/em><\/strong> (3 volumes) ; Translation of the <strong><em>\u201cDai Phuong Tien Phat Bao An\u201d<\/em><\/strong><em> <strong>Sutra<\/strong><\/em> (7 volumes) &#8211; <strong><em>The essence of Primitive Buddhist thought ; The Essence of Hinayana thought ; The essence of Mahayana though<\/em><\/strong><em>t<\/em> (trilogy) &#8211; <strong><em>War and Non-violence<\/em><\/strong> <em>(translation into Vietnamese of the book by Radhakrishnan, former President of India)<\/em> &#8211; <strong><em>Observations on the grave offences committed by the Vietnamese Communist Party against the Vietnamese people and against Buddhism<\/em><\/strong> (published by the International Buddhist Information Bureau, Paris, 1995); <strong><em>&#8220;Great Dictionary of Buddhist terminology&#8221;,<\/em><\/strong> a 6-volume, 8,000-page encyclopaedia of contemporary Buddhist terms containing 22,608 entries and 7 million words, written during his years in internal exile and prison.
