{"id":39492,"date":"2018-06-26T07:58:37","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T07:58:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/queme.org\/?p=39492\/"},"modified":"2018-06-26T08:27:45","modified_gmt":"2018-06-26T08:27:45","slug":"believe-it-or-not-it-s-my-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/believe-it-or-not-it-s-my-right\/","title":{"rendered":"New #FoRBDefender Movement Calls on People of all Faiths and None to Declare: \u201cBelieve it or not, it\u2019s my Right!\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39509\" src=\"http:\/\/queme.org\/\/app\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018-0626-eprid-forb-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018-0626-eprid-forb-3.jpg 427w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018-0626-eprid-forb-3-150x65.jpg 150w, https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018-0626-eprid-forb-3-300x129.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BRUSSELS, 26 June 2018 \u2013 The <strong>Vietnam Committee on Human Rights (VCHR), <\/strong>member of the<strong> European Platform against Intolerance and Discrimination (EPRID)<\/strong> today joins EPRID to launch their new <strong>#FoRBDefender<\/strong> movement on freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief, calling on people everywhere to unite under the slogan, <strong><em>\u201cBelieve it or not, it\u2019s my Right!\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The #FoRBDefender movement is an online initiative that aims to raise awareness of the <strong>right to freedom of religion or belief<\/strong> (\u201cFoRB\u201d). It stands in solidarity with people across the globe facing discrimination, oppression and violence because of their religion or belief (including non-belief) and calls on high-level decision-makers at national and international level to more robustly defend and protect this fundamental human right.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI am happy to be part of this important initiative\u201d<\/em> said V\u00f5 V\u0103n \u00c1i, President of VCHR. <em>\u201cIn Vietnam today, people from all walks of life are facing discrimination, harassments and imprisonment for expressing their deeply-held opinions or beliefs. It is crucial to stand up for this fundamental right \u2013 we should all be FoRB Defenders !\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Amy Shepherd, CSW\u2019s EU Advocacy Manager and member of EPRID\u2019s 2018 Board of Coordinators, said in a statement: <em>\u201cAcross the world, people\u2019s freedom to choose, manifest, change and abandon their religion or belief is under threat. There is an urgent need to stand up for FoRB and press decision-makers for more concrete and visible protective action. EPRID hopes that by reaching out to politicians, diplomats, media, business, civil society activists and others, the #FoRBDefender movement will show that FoRB protects everyone, and that everyone has a role to play in protecting FoRB.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jointly developed by EPRID, Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), European Humanist Federation (EHF), International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) and the Nordic Ecumenical Network on Freedom of Religion or Belief (NORFORB), the #FoRBDefender movement is centred on social media action. Supporters visiting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forb-defenders.org\">www.forb-defenders.org<\/a> are encouraged to commit to being \u201cFoRB Defenders\u201d and Tweet, Facebook or Instagram photos of themselves holding up the \u201cBelieve it or not\u201d logo.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, the EU adopted Guidelines on the Promotion and Protection of Freedom of Religion or Belief which set out how it intends to advance this fundamental right in external action. The #FoRBDefender movement has been inspired by EU-level discussions on how the Guidelines could be better implemented.<\/p>\n<p>According to research by the Pew Research Centre, around 80% of the world\u2019s population suffer discrimination, oppression or violence because of their religion or belief. No religion or belief group, including theists, non-theists and atheists, are exempt from FoRB violations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>EPRID is a network of civil society organisations, religious bodies and individuals operating at EU level.
