Olivier Dupuis stages sit-in  inside Thanh Minh Zen Monastery in solidarity with detained Buddhist monk Thich Quang Do"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>PARIS, 6 June 2001\n(VCHR) &#8211; Mr <strong>Olivier Dupuis<\/strong>, Member\nof the European Parliament and Secretary-general of the Transnational Radical\nParty is staging a sit-in today inside the Thanh Minh Zen Monastery at 90 Tran\nHuy Lieu Street, Phu Nhuan Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, to protest Vietnam\u2019s\narbitrary detention of prominent Buddhist dissident and Nobel Peace prize\nnominee Venerable <strong>Thich Quang Do<\/strong>. Mr\nDupuis intends to stay with Thich Quang Do inside the Monastery until the\nVietnamese Government withdraws the arbitrary 2-year \u00abadministrative detention\u00bb\nsentence and allows the monk to travel to Quang Ngai Province to escort UBCV\nPatriarch Thich Huyen Quang back to Ho Chi Minh City for medical treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before leaving his hotel for the Thanh Minh Zen Monastery at 8.00 a.m. this morning (Vietnam time), Mr Dupuis told the <strong>International Buddhist Information Bureau <\/strong>in Paris by telephone: <em>\u201cMy presence here as a European citizen and TRP Secretary-general is an act of solidarity with all those in Asia in general and particularly in Vietnam who have struggled for decades for the establishment of the rule of law, democracy and fundamental freedoms\u201d.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shocked by the recent wave of Police repression against the UBCV\nfollowing Thich Quang Do\u2019s announced trip to Quang Ngai on June 7<sup>th<\/sup>\nto bring home the ailing 83-year-old UBCV Patriarch, Mr Dupuis decided to\ntravel from Brussels to Vietnam to support the victims. Mr Dupuis is the first\nWesterner in twenty-six years, since the fall of Saigon in April 1975, to stage\na public protest in solidarity with dissidents in Communist Vietnam.\n\nA\nlong-standing advocate of democracy in Asia, Mr Dupuis has spearheaded two\nimportant Resolutions on Vietnam at the European Parliament. In the most recent\nResolution, adopted on November 16<sup>th<\/sup> 2000 (following the Government\nclampdown on the UBCV Rescue Mission for Flood victims in the Mekong Delta),\nthe European Parliament called on Vietnam to initiate <em>\u201cradical political reforms\u201d, <\/em>lift restrictions on freedom of the\npress, abolish the death penalty, release all prisoners of conscience \u2013\nincluding Thich Huyen Quang \u2013 and allow the UBCV and NGOs to organize\nhumanitarian relief missions without Government interference.
