{"id":47755,"date":"2024-01-05T09:00:25","date_gmt":"2024-01-05T09:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/queme.org\/?p=47755"},"modified":"2024-01-05T08:17:58","modified_gmt":"2024-01-05T08:17:58","slug":"vchr-and-fidh-expose-grave-violations-of-iccpr-in-vietnam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/vchr-and-fidh-expose-grave-violations-of-iccpr-in-vietnam\/","title":{"rendered":"VCHR and FIDH expose grave violations of the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in Vietnam"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>PARIS, 5 January 2024 (VCHR) \u2013 In a <a href=\"https:\/\/queme.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/01\/FIDH-VCHR_Vietnam_CCPR140_LoI_Joint_Submission_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Joint Report (opens in a new tab)\">Joint Report<\/a> to the UN Human Rights Committee today, the <strong>Vietnam Committee on Human Rights (VCHR)<\/strong> and the <strong>International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH)<\/strong> documented serious abuses of human rights in Vietnam and questioned the Vietnamese authorities on what measures they would take to improve human rights and uphold their obligations as a state party to the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report is a contribution to the \u201cList of Issues\u201d that will be\nadopted by the UN Human Rights Committee at its 140<sup>th<\/sup> session in\nGeneva on 28 March 2024. The Committee will transfer these key issues and\nconcerns to the government of Vietnam, which must reply to them before the full\nexamination of its Fourth Periodic Report on Implementation of the ICCPR, the\ndate of which has not yet been set. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VCHR and FIDH raised issues including the arbitrary detention of human\nrights defenders, climate-change activists, journalists and members of\nnon-recognized religious communities; inhumane conditions in Vietnam\u2019s prisons,\nincluding torture and lack of access to medical care; the use of the death\npenalty; unfair trials and unlimited pre-trial detention; the adoption of\nextensive legislation restricting the exercise of freedom of expression,\nassociation and peaceful assembly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on the Fourth Periodic Report of Vietnam posted on the ICCPR website, VCHR President Penelope Faulkner regretted that <strong><em>\u201cthe report prepared by the Vietnamese government denies reality and masks the fierce repression of civil society that has drawn strong criticism from the international community.
