{"id":735,"date":"2007-01-04T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2007-01-04T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/queme.org\/en\/vietnam-denies-banning-buddhist-patriarch-from-hospital-visit\/"},"modified":"2016-09-09T13:48:41","modified_gmt":"2016-09-09T13:48:41","slug":"vietnam-denies-banning-buddhist-patriarch-from-hospital-visit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/vietnam-denies-banning-buddhist-patriarch-from-hospital-visit\/","title":{"rendered":"<i>DPA<\/i> : Vietnam denies banning Buddhist patriarch from hospital visit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpa.de\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/images\/dpa_1.gif\" alt=\"Deutsche Presse-Agentur - http:\/\/www.dpa.de\" width=\"330\" height=\"55\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HANOI, January 4, 2007 (dpa) &#8211; Vietnam on Thursday denied a report that provincial authorities have forbidden the ailing patriarch of a banned Buddhist sect from travelling to Ho Chi Minh City for a medical examination.<\/p>\n<p>The government dismissed as a \u201ctotal fabrication\u201d a claim that security police denied health care for Thich Huyen Quang, 87, head monk of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam (UBCV).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no obstacle for the medical checkup of Thich Huyen Quang,\u201d government spokesman Le Dung said in a written statement.<\/p>\n<p>However, a Paris-based group of Quang\u2019s supporters, the International Buddhist Information Bureau, said Wednesday that the patriarch remained under house arrest in a pagoda in Binh Dinh province, 600 kilometres north of Ho Chi Minh City.<\/p>\n<p>The patriarch was transferred to Ho Chi Minh City in October for treatment of heart and lung conditions and underwent minor surgery on his prostate gland before being returned to Binh Dinh.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the hospital gave him a follow-up appointment at the end of December so doctors could monitor his progress, but the Buddhist Information Bureau said he had been blocked from travelling to keep the appointment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is intolerable that Hanoi prevents this elderly Buddhist leader from receiving medical care,\u201d said Vo Van Ai, a spokesman for the Unified Buddhists in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Ai said Vietnam has increased religious repression since it was removed late last year from a US list of the worst violaters of religious freedom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHanoi no longer feels the need to pretend,\u201d he said. \u201cOver the past few weeks, we have observed a significant increase in religious abuses, notably against the UBCV, the Protestants and Hoa Hao Buddhists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Unified Buddhist sect is not recognized by Vietnam\u2019s communist government as part of the state-sanctioned Buddhist sangha because Quang and his followers reject government control over church affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Thich Huyen Quang has been under police supervision since 2003, when he and his deputy Thich Quang Do, 79, attempted to hold a nationwide congress of the sect\u2019s monks. dpa kj ls<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; HANOI, January 4, 2007 (dpa) &#8211; Vietnam on Thursday denied a report that provincial authorities have forbidden the ailing patriarch of a banned Buddhist sect from travelling to Ho Chi Minh City for a medical examination.
