I am writing to respectfully ask you to nominate the Very Venerable Thich Quang Do of Vietnam as a candidate for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Nominations must be sent to the Nobel Peace Prize selection Committee, Norwegian Nobel Institute, Drammenveien 19, N-0255 Oslo, Norway, Fax +47 22 12 93 10. The deadline is 1st February 2007.<\/p>\n
The Very Venerable Thich Quang Do, a Buddhist monk, well-known writer and Deputy Head of the banned Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam (UBCV), has dedicated his life to the non-violent combat for justice, peace and human rights in Vietnam. In his courageous struggle for the rights of others, he has sacrificed his own personal safety and freedom, and has spent the past twenty five years in detention for his fearless advocacy of democracy and human rights.<\/p>\n
Since his release from prison in 1998, Thich Quang Do has been subjected to continuous harassment and surveillance by Security Police. In June 2001, he was arrested and condemned to two years administrative detention simply for launching an “Appeal for Democracy in Vietnam”, an 8-point transition plan for democratic change. In October 2003, he was arrested again after he organized a peaceful assembly of UBCV Buddhists. <\/p>\n
Thich Quang Do was awarded the prestigious 2006 Rafto Human Rights award in November 2006 for his \u201cpersonal courage and perseverance through three decades of peaceful opposition against the Communist regime\u201d<\/i>, and as a \u201cunifying force\u201d<\/i> and a \u201csymbol of the growing democracy movement\u201d<\/i> in Vietnam. The Vietnamese government refused to allow him to travel to Norway to receive this prize. Today, Venerable Thich Quang Do is detained under house arrest at the Thanh Minh Zen Monastery in Saigon without any judgement or charge. He is under permanent Police surveillance and denied the right to travel and communicate freely. <\/p>\n
We believe that the Very Venerable Thich Quang Do would be a most worthy recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. If you agree to nominate him for this award, you will not only honour a courageous proponent of peace, but also acknowledge the silent struggle of all those who risk their lives daily in the combat for human rights and religious freedom in Vietnam. Thus, we respectfully ask you to nominate Thich Quang Do as candidate for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. <\/p>\n
