Quê Me Quê Me: Action for democracy in Vietnam & Vietnam Committee on Human Rights
One of Vietnam’s most prominent religious dissidents has reportedly issued a nationwide appeal for greater democracy and pluralism.
Thich Quang Do, 76, is deputy head of the banned Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam.
The Paris-based International Buddhist Information Bureau says he has directed his call in an open letter to “Vietnamese personalities, intellectuals, writers, artists and all compatriots at home and abroad.”
The Bureau is the communication arm of the church.
It quotes Thich Quang Do as calling on all political forces to follow “a path of democracy and pluralism that will bring true stability, development and well-being” to Vietnam.
Thich Quang Do has spent most of his life in prison and is now under constant house arrest.
